A lot of people drift through life chasing what they think they want, only to realize they don’t even know what actually matters to them.

Core values aren’t trendy words you throw on a vision board. They are the quiet, steady truths that shape how you move, how you love, and how you make decisions that feel aligned rather than forced. They are the undercurrent beneath every choice that leaves you with peace, even when it’s hard.

Why Core Values Matter

When you don’t know what you value, you let the world decide for you.

You say yes when you want to say no.
You chase goals that look good on paper but leave you feeling empty.
You stay in rooms that drain you because it’s easier than leaving.
You feel out of place in your own life.

But when you know your values, decision-making becomes clearer. You begin to feel a quiet confidence in the life you’re creating, even if it doesn’t look like everyone else’s.

How to Find Your Core Values

You don’t have to lock yourself away for a month to figure this out. Here’s a simple starting point:

1. Look back at your happiest moments.
What were you doing? Who were you with? What did those moments give you that you deeply needed?

2. Notice what makes you feel out of alignment.
When you feel drained, resentful, or restless, it often points to a value being stepped on or ignored.

3. Write down what truly matters to you.
Words like freedom, creativity, connection, honesty, growth. Notice which ones spark something when you read them.

4. Choose your top 3-5.
These will act as your compass for decisions, big and small.

Living By Your Values

The hardest part isn’t discovering your values – it’s honoring them.

If you value freedom, it might mean saying no to opportunities that look secure but feel suffocating.
If you value honesty, it might mean having conversations that are uncomfortable but necessary.
If you value creativity, it might mean protecting your mornings for deep work instead of checking notifications.

Living by your values often requires letting go of approval and embracing a quieter, deeper alignment.

Let It Evolve

Your core values can shift as you grow. Don’t cling to them if they stop feeling true. Let yourself update your compass as you change, without guilt.

This isn’t about creating a rigid rulebook. It’s about building a life that feels like yours – a life you can stand behind when you lay your head down at night.

You don’t need a five-year plan to live with purpose.
You just need to know what you value, and to practice living it, one small, brave choice at a time.

Because clarity doesn’t come from thinking alone – it comes from living.
